Skeptoid #1012: THE RAKE THAT COMES FOR YOU IN THE NIGHT They say it is tall, pale, thin, with its gray skin stretched tight. Its eyes are sunken, hollow, black, and expressionless like those of a doll. It is hairless and naked, its nose merely vestigial, its lips thin and its teeth sharp. The Rake, so they say, would be taller than a man if it stood, but it never does; moving about instead like a spider on all fours, forward, backward, upside down, it doesn't matter. The Rake only comes out at night, in wooded or suburban areas — and it watches you, following alongside under cover as you walk. But before it attacks, it reveals its most terrifying trait: it speaks, in a thin, raspy, cadaverous voice. Tonight, for Halloween, we're going to look at the urban legend of the Rake. From whence does it come, and what has happened that has persuaded some people that it is a real creature, and not mere folklore? by Brian Dunning ![]() | |||

WONDER OF THE WEEK First-ever direct dating of dinosaur eggs ![]() Scientist tests calcite-filled dinosaur eggs from China's Qinglongshan fossil reserve. (Bi Zhao) One fine day a dinosaur in what is now Hubei province in China made her way to a well-used nesting site to lay her eggs. Some of them failed to hatch, and ended up being buried and eventually fossilized. This dino-mom had no inkling that some 86 million years later those eggs would be part of a scientific first. In a paper published in Frontiers in Earth Science, researchers described directly dating the preserved eggshells and tightly constraining when the eggs were laid. This first-time breakthrough promises to enable detailed study of dinosaurs. Steve Brusatte, a paleontologist at the University of Edinburgh, who wasn't involved with the study, enthuses about the new technique. "This approach here to directly dating the mineral crystals in dinosaur eggshells could be revolutionary." Brusatte explained that the method "could finally help us know the more precise ages of many dinosaurs rather than relying on estimating the ages based on the ages of volcanic rocks above and below the fossils." These eggs were already known to date to the Upper Cretaceous period, about 100 million to 66 million years ago, but getting an accurate date using normal paleontological techniques was difficult. If the sediment layers surrounding the eggs had contained volcanic rocks the scientists could have dated them using the half-lives of radioactive elements. But the sediments at this site in Qinglongshan had no such volcanic rocks. Some fossils at Qinglongshan had been dated to between 83 million and 79 million years ago by matching magnetic signatures to the known reversals of the Earth's magnetic poles. This site is rich in egg fossils, with samples spanning millions of years. Knowing their precise ages would help scientists understand the incredible diversity that evolved at that location. So they focused on one clutch of eggs in a lower layer. Several eggs were filled with calcite, which absorbs uranium into its crystalline structure. That would allow relatively precise U-Pb dating. The researchers embedded four calcite samples from a single egg in resin and used a laser to liberate uranium and lead atoms. The ratio of the two elements was determined using a mass spectrometer, and out popped the age: 86 million years. Next, the team plans to date eggs from various layers at this site to assemble an evolutionary timeline of the species that laid them. Then they want to apply the technique at other nesting sites in central China in an effort to better understand why the dinosaurs chose them for laying their eggs, and perhaps identify which species laid which eggs. Study co-author Bi Zhao, a vertebrate paleontologist at the Hubei Institute of Geosciences, says, "Sometimes, just being willing to try something new can lead to unexpected discoveries."
