(Yannick Juvé and Jonathan Romiguier) Reproduction is one of the definitions of what life is. Evolution has found all kinds of strange ways for a species to propagate. In social insects it gets pretty weird. The Iberian harvester ant (Messor ibericus) is here to say, "Hold my nectar. I'll show you weird." Lead author of a new paper, evolutionary biologist Jonathan Romiguier of the University of Montpellier, calls M. ibericus "in a sense, the most complex, colonial life form we know of so far." So what's the deal? These ant queens mate with males of another species and then clone them. Let's review the ordinarily weird sex lives of ant queens (and most social insects). On her way to establish a new colony, a young queen typically mates in the air with several winged males. She then stores the sperm for the rest of her life which, for a harvester ant queen, can be over a decade. Once in her nest she uses the stored sperm to fertilize her eggs as needed. This absolute control over fertilization allows her to create the various castes of the colony: sterile female workers who build the nest, gather food, and raise the larvae, and males who develop from unfertilized eggs, sprout wings, and head out in search of virgin queens. Eggs fed extra protein can become new queens. Interspecies mating is known in a few ant species (there goes your middle school definition of species) where queens use the alien sperm to produce workers. M. ibericus seemed to be doing this with M. structor but the researchers found that about half the males resembled M. structor, had the nuclear genomes of M. structor, but the mitochondria of M. ibericus. We're talking about an incredible mutualism between two species whose last common ancestor lived some 5 million years ago. Sara Helms Cahan, an evolutionary ecologist at the University of Vermont who was not involved with the study, says, "The end result is fantastical but incredibly successful, with one species carrying another in its pocket, as it were, all over southern Europe." Romiguier likens this to a much more ancient mutualism, when single-celled life absorbed the tiny organisms that became the mitochondria within the cells of all eukaryotes, including us and ants. Chris Smith, an evolutionary biologist at Utah State University, sums up the wonder. "When we teach biology, we should perhaps teach philosophy. The words we use, like 'individual' and 'species,' are just social constructs--nature is not." Contributed by Craig Good. | |||
